War Diary, 1/18th London Regiment – April 1917


April 1st to 4th – Halifax Camp.
Training.


April 5th – Halifax Camp.
Training.
Major General visited the Battalion at training.


April 6th – Hill 60.
Relieved 8th Battalion London Regt in the Left Sub-section of the Canal Sub-sector.


April 7th – Hill 60.
In the trenches.
The Battalion carried out a minor operation zero hour being 8 pm. All objectives were gained successfully but there was delay owing to the extraordinary bad state of no man’s land and the ground between enemies Front and Support Lines. The withdrawal was carried out successfully but very slowly owing to heavy enemy barrage. A stubborn resistance was met with and many of the enemy were killed. Eighteen prisoners were taken. Several emplacements and dug-outs were destroyed and one heavy machine gun.


April 8th to 10th – Halifax Camp.
Relieved by 15th Battalion London Regt at 2.30 am and went into Reserve at Halifax Camp.


April 11th/12th – Steenvoorde.
March by march route to Steenvoorde


April 13th to 17th – Steenwoorde.
Training.


April 18th – Steenvoorde.
The Army Commander visited the Battalion at training.


April 19th/20th – Steenvoorde.
Training


April 21st – Steenvoorde.
The Army Commander visited the Battalion at training.


April 22nd to 24th – Steenvoorde.
Training.


April 25th – Steenvoorde.
The Divisional Commander presented medal ribbons to men who had been awarded the Military Medal.


April 26th – Ontario Camp.
Marched by march route to Ontario Camp.


April 27th to 31st – Ontario Camp.
500 men per day out on working parties.
